2nd Grade Molas

2nd grade observed the characteristics of the predominant art form of the Kuna Indians of the San Blas Islands in Panama. Known as a mola, this art form is created by sewing colorful layers of fabric around a main design, typically of an animal or plant.

Since 2nd grade is learning about symmetry, they used a symmetrical cutout piece of white paper to create the face of the animal that they observed in the shape. Students used a layering technique with paper to create the rest of their symmetrical molas.
