5th Grade Collages Using Movement, Repetition and Contrast, Inspired by Henri Matisse

"Drawing with Scissors" is a concept Henri Matisse used later in his life as an artist to refer to the creation of his cut paper works, or collages.  5th grade looked a variety of collages and used similar ideas to make their own.  First students created a help sheet to refer to their primary and secondary colors. Second, they learned about the differences between organic and geometric shapes.  Finally, we reviewed the idea of using colors to create contrast and movement. They understood that an artist can control they way in which a viewer's eye moves around an artwork. Together, these elements and principles helped students to create the following artworks:
